Job Discription
Junior Moss Cultivation & Ecology Specialist
Company Description
Alive Labs develops regenerative systems for the built environment, drawing from ecological principles to reimagine how materials, organisms, and design coexist.
Our technology platform rests on three pillars:
Material Innovation — developing bio-receptive composites such as Terranite®, engineered to support life and capture carbon.
Biomass Advancement — applying directed-evolution and micro-ecological research to cultivate resilient moss ecosystems.
Biomimetic Design — using architectural and engineering strategies inspired by natural systems to solve complex urban challenges.
Through these, we’re transforming architecture into a living interface between humanity and nature — an infrastructure that heals rather than harms.
Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role in London for a Junior Moss Technician / Trainee Ecologist.
The role supports Alive Labs’ biological R&D and pilot projects — focusing on the care, observation, and propagation of moss species used within our living façade systems. Working alongside senior researchers, designers, and external bryologists, you’ll gain hands-on experience in cultivation, monitoring, and ecological design integration.
Daily activities include maintaining moss cultures in the studio and growth chambers, assisting with pilot-wall assessments, recording data, and helping develop practical methods for moss production at scale. This is an ideal position for a curious, early-career biologist or horticulturist passionate about learning from nature and contributing to regenerative design.
Qualifications
Some experience or study in plant cultivation, horticulture, ecology, or environmental science
Understanding of (or strong interest in) bryophytes, moss propagation, and ecological monitoring
Eagerness to learn about bio-receptive materials and green infrastructure systems
Ability to record and interpret growth data and environmental conditions
Collaborative mindset and willingness to work across disciplines (biology, materials, design)
Excellent attention to detail, curiosity, and enthusiasm for hands-on experimentation
Degree (or current study) in Biology, Botany, Ecology, Environmental Science, Horticulture, or related field; research or coursework in Bryology or moss ecology is highly valued
Prior laboratory or greenhouse experience is a plus but not required
What We Offer
Mentorship from leading bryologists and ecological researchers
Exposure to cutting-edge bio-material and living façade development
Involvement in real-world pilot installations and ecological monitoring
Opportunity to progress into a specialist role within Alive Labs as expertise grows
